When tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used, employers must ensure it provides an effective seal for each wearer. An ill-fitting mask can allow hazardous dusts to bypass the filter, leaving workers at risk of ill-health, and businesses at risk of non-compliance.
At Immerse Safety, we provide qualitative face fit testing to confirm that a wearer’s chosen RPE is suitable and provides a tight seal.
Why face fit testing matters
- Legal Compliance – A legal requirement under COSHH where tight-fitting RPE is used.
- Worker Protection – Ensures seals provide the level of protection they were designed to deliver.
- Avoid Costly Enforcement – Reduce the risk of HSE enforcement, notices, fines and prosecution.
- Protect Your Business – Minimise sickness absence, project disruption, compensation claims and reputational damage.
- Protect Lives – Prevent exposure to hazardous substances that can cause life-changing or fatal occupational disease
Our Service:
We carry out qualitative face fit testing in accordance with INDG479 guidance, using a recognised fit test protocol.
- On-site testing available for 6+ workers
- Individual appointments available at our office
- Experienced and competent testers
- Clear pass/fail reporting and guidance
Before the Test:
- Each wearer must bring their own mask – the exact make, model and size they will use operationally
- Mask make, model and size must be confirmed at the time of booking
- No food or drink (other than water) within 30 minutes of testing
- No smoking or vaping within 30 minutes of testing
- Wearers must be clean-shaven in the mask seal area
- Any additional PPE worn alongside the RPE (including hearing protection, prescription glasses or safety eyewear) must be worn during the test
- Wearers must be able to correctly don their mask independently and demonstrate this to the tester before testing begins
Failed Tests:
A failed test does not necessarily mean there is a fault with the mask. It may indicate that the selected RPE is not suitable for the individual’s facial profile. In either case, we’ll advise on next steps.
Please note:
- Failed tests remain chargeable
- Re-testing and alternative mask selection may be required
- Additional charges apply for repeat tests
Important Note:
Face Fit Testing does not remove the employer’s legal duties under:
- the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974,
- the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and
- the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), including duties relating to suitable RPE selection, maintenance, training, supervision and exposure control.
