IOSH updates its Code of Conduct: What you need to know

IOSH has released its updated Code of Conduct (September 2025), introducing some important changes for members. While the principles of professionalism and ethical practice remain, the way they are presented has shifted, making expectations clearer and more action-focused.

From Values to Behaviours

The most noticeable change is how the four ethical pillars are expressed.

Previous version:

  1. Respect

  2. Integrity

  3. Service

  4. Competence

New version (Sept 2025):

  • Honest

  • Competent

  • Respectful

  • Responsible

This move from abstract qualities to personal statements (“I am honest”, “I am responsible”) makes the Code more practical and behavioural. It’s easier for members, and IOSH, to assess whether conduct aligns with expectations.

Why the Change?

  • Clarity: “Honest” is more direct and personable than “Integrity.”

  • Accountability: “Responsible” broadens “Service” to cover duty to clients, employers, IOSH, and the wider public.

  • Behaviour-focused: Using adjectives (respectful, honest, responsible, competent) frames the Code around how members should act day to day.

Guidance

Another key update is that the new Code of Conduct now integrates guidance, including quick references to help members interpret and apply the principles.

What does this mean for members?

The essence of the Code of Conduct hasn’t changed;  IOSH professionals are still expected to act with professionalism, competence, and integrity. What has changed is how those expectations are framed and explained.

By making the Code of Conduct more personal and transparent, IOSH is strengthening accountability and supporting members in upholding the highest standards of health and safety practice.
